GAPAN CITY – A notorious robbery gang preying on residents of posh subdivisions in various Central Luzon provinces was believed to have been busted after its alleged head and a member were collared by a composite team of Nueva Ecija, Tarlac and regional police forces here, police reported on Thursday.
Senior Supt. Ricardo Marquez, Nueva Ecija police director, identified the suspects as Alfredo Cunanan, 59, a resident of Barangay Mallorca, San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija and William Gaon, 40, of 96 Narra St., Malabon City.
Cunanan heads the group called “Cunanan Akyat Bahay and robbery gang” that victimizes residents of subdivisions in the region. He is reportedly coordinating with some Nueva Ecija and Tarlac intelligence forces.
Villanueva said the two were arrested after the Nissan Sentra (TTP-479) they are driving passed through a checkpoint manned by the NEPPO’s provincial public safety management company commander. They were Chief Insp. Edgar Allan Okubo, Tarlac Provincial Police Office Intelligence Officer Supt. Bayani Razalan and regional public safety management company commander Chief Insp. Eric Devancio along Maharlika Highway in Barangay Bayanihan this city at about 1:05 p.m. on Tuesday.
The operation was hatched after one of their would-be victims from Capas, Tarlac was able to record the license plate of the vehicle used in their looting operations, Villanueva said in his report to the provincial director. The informant coordinated with the police.
Seized from the suspects were a caliber 9 mm pistol with no serial number with seven live ammunition, one caliber .38 revolver with serial number 34736 with five live ammunition and assorted tools used in their operations. These include a crowbar, a rubber mallet and two large screwdrivers, including the one they looted from the house of bank employee Elsa Villareal in Bayanihan.
The day they were arrested, the suspects looted houses in Baliuag and Plaridel in Bulacan then proceeded to Gapan’s adjacent towns in Jaen and San Isidro.
Villanueva said that on March 4, the two robbed the house of Paniqui, Tarlac municipal councilor Godofredo Tangonan and carted away the vault containing P440,000 worth of properties consisting of a Bull M3 super 38 pistol, a Remington caliber 45 and assorted cash and jewelry. They sold the looted items in Arranque Market in Sta. Cruz, Manila.
Last March 8, the suspects reportedly tried to enter the house of Adelita Esguerra of Doña Lutgarda Subdivision, BarangayCutcut, Capas, Tarlac but the owner’s arrival foiled the plot.
Villanueva said the suspects reportedly admitted that they were behind the string of robberies recently.
He said that the group has been engaged in the akyat-bahay-style robberies for over 30 years.
Cunanan was jailed in Muntinlupa in the early 70s. When he was released in 1977 but he allegedly went back into robbery. He survived a shooting incident with law enforcers where he sustained three gunshot wounds in the body after robbing a house in Manila.
Villanueva said the operations of Cunanan’s group were so vast and extensive that they had also operated in Singapore and Hong Kong where they were able to take HK$21 million in a single operation in 1986, which they considered their biggest loot.
The group’s main targets are subdivisions. Their modus operandi, according to Villanueva, is that they would go around subdivision compounds and spot houses whose gates are padlocked. They would ring the doorbell and check if there are people inside.
After knowing that nobody is inside, they would try opening the gates and doors using their tools and cart away vaults and other items they could carry.
From their operations, he said Cunanan allegedly amassed a fortune, including a dump truck, a mineral water station, a piggery farm and a jewelry electroplating shop in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija and in Sta. Cruz, Manila.
A case for robbery, violation of Republic Act 8294 for illegal possession of firearms and ammunition and Commission on Elections Resolution 8714 in relation to the Omnibus Election Code have been filed against the suspects who are under the custody of the Gapan PNP.
