The voice of the pastor

Mar 10, 2010

SKIPPING THE customary practice of asking the Most Rev. Paciano B. Aniceto, D.D., what he wishes for on his birthday, we rather highlight a recently delivered sermon most relevant to our times.

This is his take on the coming May 10 elections.

The commodification of the ballot, Apu Ceto denounced thus: “As Archbishop Gaudencio Cardinal Rosales said, this is the deep truth about elections: When voters sell their votes our country will suffer for six years…So this is not only the sins of politicians but also the sins of voters.”

For all the hoopla on the automated polls, the good archbishop said: “The automated election system is only about machines. It does not guarantee free and honest elections.”

It is deep inside the heart where lies that freedom and honesty: “What we need is the conversion of voters. We need to follow our conscience and study the character of candidates.”

That is if we want the full healing of our benighted land: “There is a future for us, as Santino (the lead character in that popular television soap opera series May Bukas Pa) said, if our voters are discerning and regard their vote as sacred then our sick nation will be healed.”

For healing “does not come from this world or machines, from surveys, television and radio advertisements.”

“The transformation of the Philippines starts with values. Infrastructures are useless when concern for others is absent. I hope this is the perspective you have.”

Thus spake the good Apu Ceto.

Today, on his 73rd birthday, we thank the Good Lord for His wonderful gift to the faithful of the Archdiocese of San Fernando.

It is our fondest wish too that the flock ever heed his pastoral voice.
