Kiddy crusade

Feb 22, 2010

CONCERNED PARENTS of high school students have called on still-sitting Gov. Eddie T. Panlilio to “stop stop exploiting the youth and students in political rallies to advance political interests.”

So reported a daily newspaper in the region.

“The parents assailed the blatant exploitation of the youth and students, mostly from Catholic schools” who attended the February 17 rally of Panlilio protesting the resolution of the Commission on Elections Second Divison unseating him in favor of former Board Member Lilia Pineda.

The parents called as “totally unfair and a form of disrespect” to them the schools allowing – some said forcing – their children to attend Panlilio’s rally.

“A breach of protocol,” other parents were quoted as saying, the school authorities obliged to get “a waiver from parents of minor students before allowing or using them to join rallies.”

If something untoward happened to their children, the parents asked, will the schools or Panlilio take responsibility for it?

Two high schools were identified in the news story as having their students in Panlilio’s rally: the University of the Assumption and the Assumpta Tehnical School.

The participation of the high school students in a patently adult political affair reminded us of the fabled Children’s Crusade supposedly mounted in 1212 to peacefully convert Muslims in the Holy Land to Christianity and win Jerusalem anew for Christ.

The fable seems to have found fact in the Panlilio crusade to hold on to the governorship of Pampanga.

“Isadsad ya in crusada (let us finish with the crusade).” So Panlilio cries.

Sinadsad ne ing crusada (the crusade has fallen flat on its face). So it appears.

The use of high school children in Wednesday’s protest rally shows the abject failure of Panlilio to generate necessary adult support to his cause.

The handwriting is all there in the wall for all to see. But for the blinded  Panlilio and his noisier than numerous cheerleaders.
