HE DID a Francis of Assisi. That is spurning fame and fortune and clothed himself in poverty to serve the poorest of the poor.

Dom Martin de Jesus Gomez, OSB, once known as the top fashion designer and couturier Gang Gomez, shocked the world of haute couture by becoming a Benedictine monk. His God-given gifts he employed in studies on indigenous materials that he incorporated in fashioning liturgical vestments.

For his achievements in liturgical enculturation, Dom Martin was bestowed the Outstanding Fernandino Award (TOFA) for 2010 in the field of religious service.

The other TOFA recipients are as exemplary.

Philippine Air Force T/Sgt. Salvador Buenaobra for military service, earlier cited as one of the 10 outstanding Filipino soldiers for inventing the portable runway lighting system from junk, for pioneering the incorporation and installation of the dual band amateur radio in the MD-520MG operating troops, and developing the 15th Strike Wing Wireless Network System at Sangley Point.

Former top banker David Jimenez, in the field of Heritage Preservation, for spearheading the preservation of the bells of the metropolitan cathedral and providing for their permanent display site, for the publication of the book Pinatubo: Triumph of the Kapampangan Spirit  which celebrated the tragedy and renewal of Pampanga, and for saving the leaning water tower in the city now recognized as a landmark.   

In education, muIti-awarded teacher Evelyn Sawal, head of  the Nuestra Señora del Pilar Integrated School system, for her commitment and skills in improving the state of education in the city through her involvement in the preparation of workbooks in high school English subjects as a curriculum writer and as a facilitator and trainer in various education workshops and trainings.

Rodolfo Mallari, for social services, as the only Philippine volunteer of the Michigan-based World Medical Relief Inc., facilitating millions worth of hospital equipment and medical donations to different government hospitals in the province.

Joel David in the field of architecture, for his innate artistry and creative spirit that produced such city landmarks a JunJun’s bibingka and barbeque house, Garbes-Dizon Supermarket, GeeCee Bakeshop.

Teresita Dungao in the field of community service for chartering clubs around the province, including the Masantol Liuons Club, Thomasian Lions Club, and Macabebe Lions Club and spearheading medical and dental missions, bloodletting drives, relief operations and feeding programs all over Pampanga.

Eufrecina Dizon-Garbes, for senior citizen service, for her unwavering support and generosity to her peers and fellow senior citizens through donations and regular contributions to the welfare of the elderly in the province, in the city and the town of Sta. Ana.

The newest “Hero of San Fernando” United Nations worker Jerome Gerald Yap who perished – in line of duty – in the earthquake of Haiti was also given a posthumous award at the TOFA rites last Saturday.

Outstanding Fernandinos all, excellent citizens all, worthy of emulation by the people. Luid ya ing San Fernando!
