‘Dr. Taruc should face raps’

ANGELES CITY – “Former Councilor Romy Taruc should face his problem and not run away from it.”

Thus said yesterday parents of Jayson D. Gomez, 25, who was allegedly shot twice at point blank by former Angeles City Councilor Dr. Romeo “Romy” Taruc on January 8.

Charges of frustrated murder and two counts of attempted murder were filed against Taruc on January 11 but the Angeles City Prosecutor’s office has yet to “concretely” act on the case, said Marcelo Tuazon, father of the victim.

Tuazon and his wife Lorna were interviewed at a private hospital here where their son had been confined since he was allegedly shot by Taruc with a .9 mm caliber pistol at around 10:00 p.m. He suffered gunshot wounds at the back and just below his neck.

“We have received reports that Taruc is now going home at Diamond and is just hanging out in the city,” said Tuazon, whose son is the neighbor of Taruc at Misael St., Diamond Subd., here.

The victim was celebrating his birthday with his friends at their home when Taruc reportedly got irked while they were singing with a karaoke.

The family of Gomez had been gathering all their resources to pay their hospital bills amounting to P145,000 as of yesterday.

“Doctors told us our son could now go home but we could hardly pay the bill,” said Tuazon, adding that they will be forced to leave their family’s tricycle as a form of collateral for his son’s discharge.

“Worse, the Pampanga doctors suspect that our son’s left arm could be paralyzed due to the gunshot wound at back,” he added.

Tuazon said they were advised to bring their son to the St. Luke’s hospital in Manila to save Gomez’s left arm from being paralyzed.

“You know we need more money for the therapy and check-up in Manila,” he said.

Gomez, for his part, said Taruc and his family had been “very friendly to them before the mishap occurred.”

“We didn’t expect him to act like an animal considering I apologized to him due to the noise caused by the Karaoke,” said Gomez, who was shot by Taruc while they were arguing in front of the victim’s house which is in front of the Taruc residence.

Gomez said he was inside their garden while Taruc was standing a few meters away.

Gomez’s girlfriend Arna Alcairo recounted that she was alert enough to pull his boyfriend, saving him from more gunshots.

“It’s a good thing the lower part of our wall is made of cement. Otherwise, Gomez could not have made it,” said Arna.

Oliver M. Calbentos of Barangay Pulung Cacutud here and Rommel M. Navarro of Barangay Sta. Rita in Macabebe town in Pampanga filed attempted murder charges against Taruc. They were visitors of Gomez at the victim’s party.

Gomez said Taruc also shot at his friends but the latter managed to run inside the house.
