BI to file human trafficking charges vs. Malaysians
Jun 25, 2009
The Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Clark is set to file human trafficking and bribery charges against two Malaysian nationals who were apprehended escorting three Filipino women out of the country on Tuesday.
In his report to BI Commissioner Marcelino Libanan, Regional Director Heranio B. Manalo identified the two Malaysian nationals as Darrel Chin Chun Tin and Cristopher Chung Tze Kang. The three Filipino women were identified as Elvira Lugbugan, Rebecca Solarte, both of Lanao Del Sur and Angelita Serrano of Pampanga.
The Malaysians and Filipino women were all bound for Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia on board an Air Asia Flight No. AK-6265 at the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport.
Manalo said the three women have inserted four pieces of P500 bills amounting to P2,000 each on their passports upon reaching the immigration counter.
Upon further investigation, the three women pointed to the two Malaysian nationals who will reportedly escort them to Malaysia.
Manalo noted that the passports of the two Malaysians had indicated frequent visits to the Philippines based on their passports. Manalo suspected that the Malaysian nationals had been escorting Filipino women in the past.
Libanan has instructed Manalo to file charges against the Malaysian and Filipino nationals who were involved in the attempted bribery. The Malaysian nationals will be turned over to the Immigration Detention Center in Bicutan while charges are being readied against them.
The three Filipino women were turned over to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) for further questioning and may turn state witness against the Malaysians for having violated RA 9208 or the Anti-Human Trafficking Act.
On June 18, the BI-Clark barred a Nigerian national from entering the country after the latter presented a “tampered” passport. The Nigerian national was identified as Stephen Micah Ogbulu who arrived at the Clark airport via an Air Asia flight from Kuala Lumpur.
