ORANI, Bataan -- Nine mountaineers from Bulacan who were stranded on the summit of Mount Natib in Orani, Bataan were rescued on Saturday after they were stranded on the mountain due to heavy rains.

The rescuers were from combined teams from the police, Army, barangay and the Metro Bataan Development Authority (MBDA). The mountaineers were students of the Bulacan State University (BSU) in Malolos City.

They are all fourth year students in Electrical Technology with ages ranging from 19 to 23 years old. Loemart Mangawan, 19, said they started to climb the mountain from Barangay Tala, an upland village in Orani, at 2 in the afternoon of Friday.

They reached the summit of the mountain at about 8 in the evening which is 1,226 meters above sea level and part of the Bataan National Park.

“Isa naming kasamahan ang tumawag sa nanay niya na nagpapa-rescue. Ninerbiyos siguro sa lakas ng ulan,” Mangawan said.

Federico Odiada, 20, said they found it hard to climb the summit through ropes as he thanked their rescuers.

“Huwag susubok kundi kaya para walang madamay,” he advised mountaineers.

“Masaya naman. Kaya lang kailangan buong-buo ang loob,” Mangawan said.

The two said they will return to the mountain.

Most of the mountaineers suff ered from bites of “linta (leeches).”

Chief Insp. Leodebaldon Bacon, Orani police chief, said they started the rescue operation at dawn on Saturday.

“Totally exhausted ang mga mountaineers,” he noted.

The rescuers and the mountaineers returned to the village at around 12 noon.

Sr. Supt. Melecio Dayag, Bataan police director, said the MBDA has high-tech communications facilities.

“Mabilis ang aksiyon. Full government approach ang rescue operation. Simultaneous at automatic ang galaw ng lahat,” the police official said.

General Manager Carlos Pizarro, Jr. of the MBDA was in the rescue operation site.

He said the mother of one of the mountaineers requested for his help.

“Kailangan dumaan sa proseso. Mag-register muna sa barangay,” Dayag advised mountaineers.
