13 hurt as truck swerves into Black Nazarene procession

Jan 11, 2018

MABALACAT CITY -- Thirteen devotees ended up in a hospital here when a dump truck almost mowed them down during a Black Nazarene procession along the MacArthur Highway here at about 8:30 p.m. last Tuesday.

City police officer Senior Inspector Jeffrey Jalandoni said the accident was triggered by a Mitsubishi Montero vehicle driven by one Michelle Ong.

Police investigators found out that the Montero was initially parked on the side of the highway but suddenly accelerated and hit the side of the Isuzu Elf dump truck which was cruising along.

The truck, driven by one Lito Trandon, swerved to the other lane were a procession of the Black Nazarene was in progress, hitting 13 of the devotees.

The truck also hit three other vehicles which bore minor damages.

Initial investigation indicated that the Montero vehicle sped off without its driver yet setting foot on the gas pedal.

Jalandoni said the 13 injured devotees were brought to the Mabalacat District Hospital for treatment of minor injuries, but that they opted not to file charges against the truck driver. Police said, however, said they are still determining whether the case of the Montero was due to driver error or mechanical defect, amid past report of uncontrolled acceleration in such type of vehicles.
